| Many businesses today increasingly rely on computer systems for storing and retrieving their information. A number of businesses have no disaster recovery plans in place and should an event occur a huge part of their business i.e. contacts, drawings, financial information etc, would be irretrievably lost. |
|
| Planning for a disaster relies on common sense and “what if” scenarios. Any business should perform a daily and weekly backup and ensure this information is stored securely in a secondary location and if at all possible in a “Data Safe” and not in a “Fire Safe”. A Fire Safe primarily protects paperwork and doesn’t protect tapes or disk devices which can melt! |

| When creating a disaster recovery plan it is vital to consider exactly what is the objective of the DR plan? |
- Which machines need to be restored and online first?
- Which users require access?
- How soon will it take to be 100% operational?
- Do any servers or applications need to be highly available?
- Identify the most critical data.
- How long can the business afford to be offline?
- How soon can replacement servers, storage and desktop be available?
- Do you need to consider remote offices/sites?
- Once the DR plan is in place ensure that you test it regularly
- Ensure that any new equipment is added to the DR plan
- Do you have adequate insurance to cover data loss should it occur?
- Do you require a secondary DR location?
